Welcome

Le Tour du Mont Valin is an important annual event held in Saguenay on the third week-end of March.  It’s a magnificent ride in the kingdom of snow.  This citizen cross-country skiing competition gathers masses of casual cross-country skiers as well as the world’s elite skiers.  It’s located in the national Mont-Valin Park, which is about 30 km north of Chicoutimi in the province of Quebec.  Any skier who thinks he is physically fit enough to complete the race is welcomed.

Challenge

Four circuits are offered, both in free and classic style.  The 50 and 38km geographically go around the mountain, revealing some breathtaking views.  The 12 and 20km are held at the foot of the mountain near the interpretation center and the park’s services.

The 50km : Course leveled on four meters wide and marked out the entire way.  It demands strength and endurance because the altitude of the race varies between 230 and 720 meters.

The 38km : It is the same as for the 50km but without a 12km ring done in the piedmont.  It is a little less demanding but still geared towards skiers with experience.

The 20 and the 12km : Both are located at the piedmont and go into the 12km course in the national Park.  They both offer a good view of the mountain.

Time limit for the 38 and 50km is 6 hours and 30 minutes.  At any given time, the organization can remove a skier they think will not meet this objective.

Security

Security is ensured by Sauvetage 02, a specialized organization, assisted by a group of people in charge of closing the tracks.  These people are from the Caribou Conscrits ski-doo Club and Radio Amateur Saguenay Club.

All the tracks are marked out and all danger zones are identified. Teams of volunteers are on site and can react quickly.  Five relays are scattered throughout the course and the distance between each of them is about 8km.  Each relay has a team of first-aid professionals, Sauvetage 02, who have the necessary equipment in case of emergency.  All relays are linked to the operation center by a team of communication professionals, Radio Amateur Saguenay.  There is also an emergency room, where a nurse and a doctor are available.  Ski-doo club Caribou Conscrit is in charge of controlling the tracks and of the general security.

To make sure that each track is easily recognizable, it corresponds to a specific color well placed all over the circuit (it is the skier’s responsibility to know its track) :

12km = Blue
20km = Orange
38km = Yellow
50km = Red

Supplies

There are five relays where water, beverages and healthy snacks are served.
